Around the Corner – Canepa Cars and Coffee May ’17

I challenge you, dear reader. I challenge you to look deep down inside yourself, to search your feelings, find what’s real, and answer me one thing…

Can you dig it?

The sight before you comes from Scotts Valley, home to twelve thousand residents, a few good pubs, and the one gem known as Canepa.

This one gem is home to countless other gems, which I’ll cover in another post. Today’s view however, will hopefully whet your appetite for their wonderful Cars & Coffee event.

Occurring through the summer on every second Saturday, the Canepa Cars & Coffee event hosts the spirited, inspired, and curious car enthusiasts from the Bay Area and beyond, whom all add to the melting pot that is Car Culture.

As I’ve fallen into doing, this will only be but a small taste of everything this morning gathering has to offer, but don’t take my word (images?) for it. You have to come.

Why? Whereas the Danville event is a sprawling affair, an endless buffet whose offerings are only limited by your walking pace, Canepa’s event is considerably more curated.

More filtered, more distilled; it’s ultimately a more ridiculous meeting of the minds than can be found anywhere in reasonable proximity. The smaller space requires to the guardian of the lot entrance to be more choosy. As offered by their Facebook page, an early Borgward will be more welcome than a late Ferrari.

Which is not to be rude, but highlights the intention for the quality and uniqueness this meeting is meant for. A row of 996 Carrera 2s is all good and well, but there are better reasons to get up at six in the morning.

Like, I don’t know, a Morris all ate up with motor.

The highlight of the morning was the attendance of Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and the ‘3000 horsepower Shelby Super Snake he drove in 1967-68’.

I was a good thirty yards away when they started it and I still had to plug my ears a bit. Just feeling the shockwaves as they revved the motor was awe inducing. It’s a wonder we do anything else for entertainment when there’s the option to sit behind a motor bolted to a ladder and rip a pass.

Moving through the rest of the lot was it’s own entertainment. Seeing so many different enthusiast cars rub shoulders always brings a smile to my face.

I keep seeing this GT-R, and it’s one of my favorite examples. Clothed in what is to many the quintessential R32 color, and wearing some super sweet Nismo kicks, I wouldn’t change a damn thing about it.

Though not my best, this is one of my favorite photos from the meet. You could totally make some sort of story out of this. Something about a dude who lives in this building because he sold everything he had just to buy his dream car. Or some lady on the run, hold up in an inconspicuous house with a not-so-inconspicuous ride.

And that’s kind of the thing with these events. The cars themselves are great, but just as important if not more so are the stories attached to them, real or otherwise.

As always, if there are any other meets you think we should check out, post below or on social media! Keep scrolling here for a few more shots, but try and come on out if you have time. There’s always something to see, something to hear, something to learn. Should you find yourself looking for something to do on the second Saturday of the month, drop on down! And bring your stories with you.
